The AAO in partnership with ANAM presents TRACT
Tract is a bringing together of the two diverse worlds of the Young Wagilak Group’s traditional ceremonial song and composed orchestral material performed by ANAM students. This is at once tied together and challenged by composer-violinist Erkki Veltheim’s astounding improvising skills on violin.
Also included in the program the world premiere of Smoke by Paul Grabowsky, commissioned by ANAM; and Glass by John Rodgers.
Smoke is a work designed to allow improvised encounters to occur between the chamber players and the AAO musicians on a level playing field. The work explores pitch and rhythm in ways that both experienced improvisers and highly trained classical musicians can relate to.
In Glass, Rodgers has created a concerto featuring improvising trumpet virtuoso Scott Tinkler. The inspiration for Glass originates from large sheets of industrial glass being scraped by metal objects and allows for improvised interactions from Tinkler’s exciting individual voice throughout.
Featuring: Scott Tinkler, trumpet; Erkki Veltheim, violin; Benjamin Wilfred, vocals, clap sticks, Daniel Wilfred, vocals clap sticks and David Wilfred, didjeridu; Paul Grabowsky, director; Musicians of the Academy; the Australian Art Orchestra; and special guests.
