Phillip Slater

Curator 'The Hollow Air'/ Trumpet

BCA (Hons), Grad. Dip. I.M. (Lib), Mmus. Phil Slater is a trumpeter and composer based in the Illawarra region of New South Wales.

He is the leader or co-leader of several groups including the Phil Slater Quartet and Band of Five Names. His quartet features pianist Matt McMahon, bassist Lloyd Swanton and, fellow AAO member, drummer Simon Barker. The Quartet recently released a recording entitled The Thousands. Phil also performs in a number of bands including Daorum, Matt McMahon’s Paths and Streams, Baecastuff, AustraLysis, Gest8 and Roam the Hello Clouds

Phil has performed and recorded with of artists from diverse musical backgrounds, including Lou Reed, Nigel Kennedy, Missy Higgins, Archie Roach, Katie Noonan, DIG, Jim Black, Bobby Previte, Terumasa Hino, Guru Karaikudi R. Mani, and Bae Il Dong.

He has won several awards including the Freedman Fellowship, the National Jazz Award, the Bell Award for Australian Jazz Musician of the Year and Australian Contemporary Jazz Ensemble of the Year, and the Limelight Award for Outstanding Achievement in Australian Jazz.

Phil currently teaches at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music within the Jazz Department.
