Program Notes
Having explored many different pathways to improvisation over the years, Hard Core sees the AAO return to it's roots in contemporary jazz; giving full vent to the power of the music that many of of the membership play outside the group, the ‘hard core’ of their expression. Created for the 2003 Melbourne International Jazz Festival, it features original works by nine leading musicians/composers within the Australian contemporary improvised music scene: musicians which the AAO is proud to have as members.
With Hard Core, the AAO also continues its celebrated history of being a leader of commissioning in contemporary Australian music with new works from two emerging talents, Melbourne pianists Andrea Keller and Tim Stevens commissioned especially for this program.
