SHUFFLE-PLAY
An evening with the Australian Art Orchestra
SHUFFLE – PLAY celebrates the magic of the recently restored 100 year old Coburg Town Hall organ and explores the sonic and spatial potentials of the space - from the inner workings of the organ itself through to the upper balconies.
An eccentric instrument full of quirk and character, the Coburg Town Hall organ was originally made for silent films and is a rare treasure in Melbourne's north. Premiering two newly commissioned works composed by AAO Artistic Director Aaron Choulai, and AAO 23/24 Associate Artist, Sofia Carbonara, SHUFFLE – PLAY embraces the playfulness in music of cabaret, silent film, and cartoons, while employing extended techniques on acoustic instruments, the unexpected use of everyday objects/gestures, and the idiosyncratic individual musical languages within the Australian Art Orchestra.
Commissioned for the Coburg Town Hall Organ by Brunswick Music Festival
